Solar for BIPOC Houses of Worship
In partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Energy Innovation Network
In 2022, RE-volv, Green The Church, and Interfaith Power & Light joined forces to launch the Solar for BIPOC Houses of Worship Initiative, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Energy Innovation Network and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Through this initiative, we aimed to accelerate the deployment of solar energy in communities by assisting BIPOC houses of worship around the country in transitioning to solar.
During the pilot phase, three houses of worship went solar, collectively saving over $200,000 on electricity bills and avoiding hundreds of thousands of pounds of CO2 emissions. The pilot tracked the challenges, learnings, and successes of bringing solar to these communities.
While the pilot phase has come to a close, RE-volv continues to bring solar to houses of worship nationwide. You can learn more about our initiative by downloading the report below.
Watts-Willowbrook Church of Christ, one of the churches in the Initiative pilot phase, held a community event to celebrate the installation of their 12 kW solar and soon-to-be-installed battery storage system. The Compton Mayor gave the project an award.
