Georgia's Largest Animal Shelter Goes Solar - March 2024

Lifeline Animal Project partners with Georgia Tech students to go solar

LifeLine Animal Project celebrates 200kW solar installation developed in partnership with RE-volv and Georgia Tech's Solar Ambassador chapter.

Atlanta, Georgia – March 30 — LifeLine Animal Project, Georgia's largest animal welfare organization, celebrated the installation of a 200kW solar system developed in partnership with RE-volv and Georgia Tech's Solar Ambassador chapter.

The solar installation will generate $1.6 million in electrical bill savings throughout the system's operational life. These savings will be reinvested into LifeLine's animal welfare programs. The system will offset emissions equivalent to removing over 1,000 gas-powered vehicles from roadways for one year.

The celebration featured a solar ribbon-cutting ceremony with remarks from Chandra Farley, Chief Sustainability Officer of the City of Atlanta, plus a solar-themed pet adoption event.

"LifeLine Animal Project is thrilled to participate in this solar power initiative which will not only benefit the environment but will also allow us to help more animals in the long run," said Tracy Thompson, Shelter Director at LifeLine Animal Project.

Georgia Tech Solar Ambassadors initiated outreach efforts two years prior. RE-volv's year-long fellowship has trained over 400 national ambassadors in solar education, project development, campus sustainability planning, and clean energy career connections.

"As a student with a growing passion for renewable energy, the Solar Ambassador program looked like the perfect way to get experience with solar and simultaneously make a difference in my community," said Ella, former president of Georgia Tech's Solar Ambassador chapter. Following this project's completion, Ella graduated and now works as a solar energy analyst.

"The well-researched 'solar seeding effect' shows that one non-residential solar installation will spark 80 residential solar installations in the next 5 years. We are proud to support LifeLine with this bold commitment to sustainability," said Andreas Karelas, RE-volv Founder and CEO.

RE-volv also partnered with Capital Good Fund — a nonprofit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) — to launch Georgia BRIGHT, a zero-down residential solar lease.
